ICD-10 Follies: Falling From the Sky

MedpageToday

The switch to the ICD-10 coding system may have been pushed back at least a year by Congress, but ѻý still thinks it's worthwhile to spotlight some of those thousands of new codes that might just be getting a bit too granular.

A couple of days ago, a source asked whether or not there was a code for injury due to the act of self-ejection from a jet with parachute deployment. Considering this is how Goose died in "Top Gun," and it is an injury risk universal to all fighter pilots, we both figured a code had to exist.

Alas, no such code graces the index; however, there are 20 codes for injuries befalling parachutists not involving self-ejection from a jet seat, and several of them are code extensions to distinguish between initial or sequelae.

Today's code:

: Other parachutist accident, subsequent encounter.

Other "Follies"

W22.02XD: Watch Where You're Walking

F40.218: Fear of the Easter Bunny

V95.42XA: Crash Landing of Spaceship

V95.33XD: Sucked Into Jet Engine

Y92.253: Injured in an Opera House

Z73.1: Type A Behavior Pattern
